In olden times, this rock block
was named “Roche à
l’Homme”
The story says that a goatherd,
fell from the chalky rock, and
to
remember him, a cross was set
up—at first a wooden cross,
and in more recent times, a concrete
cross. Today, in order to see
the cross as well as the beautiful
panorama of Nismes and the lovely
valleys below, you'll need to
follow the little path that winds
it way up among the foliage. Silica,
potteries, coins, nails, and glass
objects prove that the place was
used by early inhabitants.
